Overview for Logos and Brand Development

When growing up in the West my family oftentimes went out to my Grandmother who lived on my Uncle's range. I always remember the several marks associated with the ranch. The cattle had the D Bar D brand, latter owned by someone else and referred to as the "Stirrup" brand. The second D was reversed. Brands had several needs in their design,

  • Easily recognized
  • Hard to overwrite "retouch" i.e. use a simple branding implement such as a cinch ring to change into another brand.
  • Easy on the tongue, verbal and mental recognition.

Logos and marks have been used since petroglyphs were first created. Today we are bombarded with images, many of them a logo.
You need your logo to tell your story at a glance. Established logos can metamorphose into simpler marks as time goes on.

The Logo Process

Finished Logo

The Logo creation process is like many other creation processes, defining a need, what the use will be and what it will compete against.

The most common uses today include letter head, website banner head, physical products, building signage, vehicle wraps/signage, and of course, business cards.

Pencil sketches help flesh out the initial likes and dislikes of a client.
This is also a time to educate each other as a team. I get to find out about your company, it's market and needs for signage. I hope that my knowledge in design and image presence with help both of us with, as a team, create the best logo and brand presence for your product.

Type of Files Produced

When I first started designing, it was paper in ink, with multple plates, one for each color.
Today it's all done with electronic computer files delivered on a disc or into a dropBox on a file server. The file types that I can produce include:

  • .pdf, "portable document file" with vector artwork
  • .ai Adobe Illustrator native file in CS 5.5
  • raster art files including .jpg, .tif and .eps
  • native Photoshop files with layers, CS 5.5

Ask about other file type as needed, i.e. DXF Cad files.
